本学では令和７（２０２５）年度の客員教授としてオックスフォード大学名誉教授の Alexis Sanderson 先生をお迎えすることとなりました。
　先生は、密教研究の世界的な大家であり、主としてヒンドゥー教の一大派をなしているシヴァ教や佛教系の密教等に関する数々の優れた論文の著者として知られています。特に膨大な密教資料（多くは未校訂の写本）を緻密に解読分析しながら、インド史の中のシヴァ教の展開を概観しつつ、佛教密教の形成に多大な影響を与えた‘The Śaiva Age’（2009 年）に代表されるような研究は、インド学・佛教学における画期的な貢献となっています。
　今回の授業でも、シヴァ教の歴史的展開と佛教に対する影響を詳しく解説し、前半では、シヴァ教系密教の紹介に重点を置き、後半では、佛教の後期密教の代表的な文献で無上瑜伽経典として分類されている Cakrasaṃvara を読解する予定です。

Śaivism and the Rise of Tantric Buddhism

This series of seminars will outline in the first four the history of Śaivism in its principal forms and then, from this basis, will present in the remaining eleven detailed evidence of how Śaiva beliefs and practices exerted an ever increasing influence on Buddhism through the emergence of ever more radical forms of Buddhist Tantric practice. The seminars will include the reading of passages from primary sources in Sanskrit. Handouts that will contain these passages will be provided in advance of each seminar. The last six seminars will be devoted to a close reading of passages of the Yoginītantra Herukābhidhāna, also known as the Cakrasaṃvara or Laghv-abhidhāna, which exhibits the zenith of this influence, showing direct dependence on Śaiva sources. We will read the Śaiva source, the Buddhist parallel, and some of the efforts of Buddhist commentators to naturalize this material.
